The Boys of Summer

by Roger Kahn

Amazon - B&N

DC First book about sports (other than Sea Biscuit) I really enjoyed.  Maybe those were simpler times, but it somehow lifts your spirit to learn the human reality, for better and worse, that transcends the sports star facades of those old Brooklyn Dodgers.
DE
TI  I wish there was more baseball.
SJ
RK
NM
MW Race relations, history, parental relationships,  newspapers, and an explanation for why there's no choking in MLB - all in one well-written story!

Profiles in Courage

by John F. Kennedy

Amazon - B&N

DC Fascinating history.  I'm just trying to figure out how we got from a president who could write "Profiles in Courage" to one who swaggers up to the lectern and says "Bring 'em on!"
DE From a historical perspective, the book was interesting, but as a storyteller, I didn't find JFK that compelling.
SJ
MW It would be nice to have a president who could pretend to have written this book.

TI  JFK and no sex stories?  More hype than substance

Seabiscuit: An American Legend

by Laura Hillenbrand

Amazon - B&N

DC  Equestrian Rocky – They’ll probably feature Sylvester Stallone in the movie – as the horse.  A well written and fascinating peek into spectator sports of a bygone era.
DE A sometimes overly-romanticized but compelling story
DG
TI Down the stretch they come and Seabiscuit is a clear winner.
RK Here comes the Biscuit!  Without a Triple Crown, he'll forever be a footnote to War Admiral
NM A great ride
MW Off quickly and wins going away

Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions

by Ben Mezrich

Amazon - B&N

DC Geeks Gone Wild - it might not ring true, but hey, fantasy is supposed to be more fun to read.
DE
DG  A distorted though nontheless intriguing look at a world whose true nature most of us will never have the opportunity to experience
TI Hit me a again!  Clear 21 winner.
RK
NM Junk Food

MW Rings false, especially the math.
